The North Carolina State Bar certifies lawyers as specialists in designated practice areas as a service to the public. The program assists members of the public in the selection of legal counsel by identifying lawyers who have demonstrated special knowledge, skill and proficiency in certain areas of law. The program also gives lawyers a credible way of making their expertise known to the public and other lawyers.

To be certified as a specialist in a practice area, a lawyer must have been in practice for at least five years, devote a significant part of his practice to the specialty area, attend continuing legal education seminars in the specialty, be favorably evaluated by other lawyers and judges, and pass a written examination I the specialty practice area. For more information about the North Carolina Specialization program, and to view a list of legal specialists by practice area, please visit the Legal Specialization website at www.nclawspecialists.org or call the State Bar at 919.828.4620.

    Why Workers' Compensation is Important

    Last updated 1 year ago

Somewhat ironically, workers’ compensation laws exist as a means of eliminating the need for litigation. Workers’ compensation laws are designed so that employees who are injured or permanently disabled on the job can be compensated for medical bills, time lost at work, and emotional and physical injuries sustained, without having to endure lengthy or medical legal battles. In practice, this is rarely the way workers’ compensation works, which is why it is important for you to hire a personal injury attorney who is an expert in the field of workers’ compensation.

Even if workers’ compensation laws do not always work the way they are designed to, they provide attorneys with the framework necessary for them to help you get the compensation you deserve if you are injured or disabled in the workplace. While your legal representative will be able to help you understand any facet of workers’ compensation law you may have a fuzzy understanding of, there are some facets of workers’ compensation law that it may be prudent to know in advance of being injured or disabled while on the job.

Your Employer Doesn’t Distribute Workers’ Compensation; Insurance Companies Do

If you are satisfied with your employer and feel confident that you would be taken well care of if you were to sustain an injury or a disability-causing accident while at work, then it is important to know that you are unlikely to receive workers’ compensation directly from your employer.  In virtually every case, employers have workers’ comp insurance, which means that you will be dealing with an insurance company if you are hurt on the job, not your employer.  Even if you hold your employer in the highest regard, you cannot count on his or her insurance company to be fair to you. That insurance company is going to be lobbying to keep its costs to a minimum.

Not Every Injury is Covered Under Workers’ Compensation Law

If you are injured on the job, then there is no guarantee that you will receive workers’ compensation.  However, if you hire an experienced and knowledgeable attorney, you will increase your chances of getting the compensation you deserve.  Regardless of whether you had a clear on the job accident or your injury stems from an occupational disease, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, a good work place injury attorney will use his or her knowledge of workers’ compensation law to benefit you.

If you are a North Carolina worker who has sustained an injury in the work place, dial (919) 249-5080 for the Law Office of D. Hardison Wood to start preparing your workers’ compensation case today!

    Elder Abuse in America

    Last updated 1 year ago

In their time, America’s elderly worked hard to make our society what it is today. Still, many people tend to write them off as useless, or worse, abuse them.

In this short video, we learn all about elder abuse in America and what’s being done about it. Elder abuse refers to the physical abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of older Americans. When this video was made, there was no federal legislation addressing the issue of elder abuse—luckily, the Elder Justice Act of 2010 has changed that.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of elder abuse, contact the Law Office of D. Hardison Wood. Our attorneys are well-acquainted with the latest legislation regarding elder abuse, and would be happy to review your case. Give us a call today at (919) 249-5080 to get started.
